Delhi Zoo
The Delhi Zoo is located near ITO. It is spread over a vast expanse of 240 acres. The zoo was founded in the year 1957. It is funded by the national Government. The zoo is home to some 1,700 creatures and 185 species in all. The Delhi Zoo is considered to be one of the finest zoos in Asia. At the entrance stands the beautiful Kos Minar built by Jehangir, the son of Mughal emperor Akbar. As you climb the red sandstone gate,you can witness the huge expanse that this zoo is built upon.

Flora and Fauna
The zoo has animals from across countries and continents like Africa, America and Australia and even Asia. The animals one can find here are Chimpanzee, Hippopotamus, Spider monkey, African Wild Buffalo, the Gir Lion and Zebras. The zoo in the year 1995 introduced certain animals like grey kangaroos (Australia), three African antelopes (Red Lechwe) and a pair of jaguars (South America). During the migratory season creatures like Macaque, Banteng, Emu, Hyenas, Axis deer, Fallow deer, Peafowl, Hog Dear and the Jaguar make the swamps their refuge. Situated right in the middle of the zoo is the underground Reptile Home complex. This complex is home to various nocturnal species including the Pythons and king Cobras. The zoo maintains more than 200 varieties of trees. All the trees come with a description and information about the trees for all the tree enthusiasts. Learn more as you go past the Phulahi hedges and the hanging yellow Alamtas. The zoo has a library also which is a storehouse of information on birds, animals, plants, popular species of birds and animals in India.

Conservation Measures
The Delhi Zoo has undertaken several measures to improve awareness about wildlife conservation. The zoo has a Battery Operated Trolley, a measure that is popular with kids as well as old people. The zoo authorities have also made sure to provide a natural habitat to the birds and animals in the zoo. The elephant rides have been re-introduced in the zoo now.The zoo with its green environs forms an ideal picnic spot. There is a cafeteria outside the zoo. There are a number of points where water is available so there is no need to carry water bottles. The timings of the zoo in the summers are 9:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. and in the winters are 9:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.
