What You Can Take With You on a Plane

Rather than provide a list of what one organization or another will allow you to take on a plane, here is a method for figuring it out. This is not foolproof. Always be ready for surprises, to the best of your ability.

.Make a list of all the places (airports) you will be travelling through. Include your starting point, your final destination, and every stopover in between, no matter how short.

.Work methodically through your list, one airport at a time.

.Starting with the first airport, and using the internet as much as you can, find out the rules for the airline you will be flying on. Look at your ticket. In the case of "code sharing" flights you may book with one airline and find yourself sitting on the plane from another.

.

Still at the first airport, check the rules of the airport itself. In the USA you will look at what the TSA rules are. In other places, look on the airport's own website and determine what will be allowed. These rules may differ from the airlines' rules. Follow the MOST STRICT set of limits.

.If you are flying internationally, or if you have a passport from a country other than the one in which you are boarding, be sure that all your travel documents are in order. Carry your passport and have it ready to present.

.If you are flying internationally, there may be export restrictions you have to pay attention to. This varies by country. Some things to be aware of are cultural objects (art, artifacts), military items and items that the government of the country you are leaving does not allow to be exported to the country you are going to. Check the website of the government of the country you are leaving to see what "export restrictions" used as a search term produces. You may have to be inventive to do a thorough search. If there is an object you are wondering about, you can ask the authorities before you go to the airport.

.The kind of limits on what you can carry will usually depend upon the size and weight of the items (your baggage limits), the nature of the items (determines whether you can take it at all, and if so, whether it is allowed in carry-on luggage), and the rules in place for going through security. For example, at Heathrow in London, England, the security check for international departures allowed only one piece of carry-on baggage, and required all creams and lotions to be placed in a plastic bag for inspection, as at December 2006. This sort of rule changes from time to time, and what the airport security screeners allow may be different than what the airline's published rules are.

.If you are disabled, you may be entitled to a different luggage and carry-on allowance than the general public. Check with all relevant authorities to make sure you have advised them of your needs. Be sure to carry all necessary documentation. (This is a large and separate topic).

.After you have made sure of what is allowed and not allowed at the first airport, proceed to analyse the second one. This time, you need to look at what arriving passengers are permitted to bring in. Quarantine laws are especially important. Research them before you go.

.Stopovers, especially international stopovers, can raise unforeseen issues. If your baggage has been checked through to your final destination, then all you usually need to be concerned with is your carry-on luggage and your travel documents. In some cases, there is a customs inspection performed at the stopover point, even when the baggage is checked all the way through. The best way to deal with this is to find out at the time of booking whether there are going to be any changes in what you are allowed to carry, because of the stopover. It depends upon the countries through which you are travelling, and the practices of the various airlines. On well-travelled routes, particularly where there are many business travellers, the procedures are usually fairly easy to handle.

.After you have worked your way through the list of airlines for your outbound journey, repeat the process. This time, you will be leaving instead of arriving, so you are essentially checking everything in reverse.

.For simple domestic flights, the process is not complicated. Ask a travel agent or do an internet search to find out the current rules. The reason this article does not contain a list is because lists become outdated. It is important to get current information from the official source.

.It's always better to travel light. Buy what you need when you get to your destination and you will have less to carry.

.Government agencies to search for information are the customs, immigration, tourist bureaux (they want to encourage travellers), border authorities, agriculture, quarantine, and similar.
